Privacy
The Physician Office System Program
(POSP) supports physicians in their responsibility to protect
patient privacy and health information collected in clinic
operations. POSP provides privacy assistance for clinics using VCUR
2008 electronic medical record (EMR) solutions including online
privacy training, preparation of privacy impact assessments (PIAs),
and security and privacy self-assessments.
Online Privacy Training
POSP provides privacy training
programs on the POSP website for physicians and clinic staff
including general privacy training, physician privacy training
(Mainpro-M1 accredited) and privacy officer training. Effective
information management practices are included. Sign up and log in as a POSP member to access
all privacy training programs.
Privacy Impact Assessment
Under Section 64 of the Alberta
Health Information Act
(HIA), physicians (custodians) are legally required to
prepare and submit a PIA to the Office of the Information and
Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) for review. EMR transition advisors for
privacy are available to review a clinic’s privacy practices and
assist with the completion of a clinic’s PIA.
The POSP online General
Privacy Training program must be completed before an EMR transition
advisor for privacy can be assigned to a clinic.
Privacy and Security Self-Assessments
Easy to use privacy and
security self-assessments may be downloaded to assist a
clinic in reviewing its security and privacy policies, practices
and procedures. Clinics may choose to complete these annually
after their PIA is accepted.
