Three Hills Medical Clinic Every Clinic Has Different EMR Needs

Just as every patient's needs are different, so too are the needs of medical clinics.

Sharon Peters, business manager at Three Hills Medical Clinic, found that out firsthand when the clinic started to upgrade their electronic medical record (EMR) system in April 2010.

Looking back at her clinic's migration from Clinicare to a Med Access vendor conformance and usability requirements (VCUR) 2008 EMR solution, Peters says she wasn't afraid to ask questions. She knew her clinic had some issues that were a little different than the norm, particularly in the layout of the clinic and the additional hardware needed.

"I tried hard to figure things out on my own and would start asking questions," Peters says. "You really need to learn to speak up for the needs of the clinic. You don't have to fit in the box for the Physician Office System Program (POSP) or the EMR provider. It took awhile to have the courage and the know-how."

That meant not only asking hard questions of the EMR provider and POSP staff, but also tapping into key resources elsewhere.

"Peer to peer support is important so that you can learn from others' experiences," she says, noting it is important to build a network with other clinic managers. "Our clinic made use of the peer to peer program twice over the past 10 months and we have found it very worthwhile."

The clinic also made use of other POSP services such as guidance with their privacy information assessment (PIA) and a requirements study. That review helped identify critical aspects such as "what we needed, what we wanted, what kinds of things are important to us as doctors, as staff?"

Peters and Dr. Martinus Reedyk admit the challenge was worth it. Their clinic is now reaping the rewards with improved office communication and better access to patient information.

"I think I would have switched earlier if I had known all the benefits," says Dr. Reedyk. "There is increased productivity because of easy navigation within the chart."

"We were surprised at how easy it is to navigate within the chart compared to what we were on before," says Peters. "It's really easy to get around in."
